Hey there... Dont' you love suitcase 44 ? I do... even if it is very obscure and I don't get half of it... I thought it could be a good idea if we started to look into the symbolism of animals, since they seem to play an important role... I thought I'd start with the horses in this suitcase...Here, the title of the clip says "karuselli, harsh prison" Then we see an open field with a carroussel in it, where three white horses are turning clockwise, round and round, a strange clownesque figure comes walking by in the distance, his small size changes the perception of the landscape, which seems immense compared to the small figure; then there are some disturbances, a cross is flashing twice, then we see that the caroussel has stopped, the clown is then near and turns the carroussel manually, the horses jump up and start running again, the white horse appears to be black against a bright light, then the clown turns the carroussel anti-clockwise, and then it seems a horse is captured in a transparant film; it jumps even more, like it wants to free itself, and again looks black against the white background; then the clown has a rather evil smile, and after that we see the clown and the carroussel with the horses under a glass globe, in miniature, like those things tourists buy as a souvenir. Through a window with bars, we see a zebra, presumably free, but we see it behind bars and he has the stripes like a prisoner's costume... It's like it is an emprisoned horse... It seems the prison expands on both sides of the bars... Could the black and white refer to good and evil? Like in Western movies ? I think I remember that in the Moab desert Luper arrives on a white horse, which inspires the Mormon community that give him shelter to see him as the angel Moroni; and Luper's gailer has a black horse (not sure... ) at least he has a black hat and suit, in opposite to Luper's white gear... The question about the zebra's colour in the game might refer to the question wether the prisoner, the human, is good with evil tendencies or evil with good tendencies? Hence also the positive and negative images of zebra's on the game? And with the white horses looking black against a bright light in the clip, there is a hint of good and evil being relative? Because all the horses do is look white or black in certain circumstances, the rest is a matter of perception... ? _______ Je n'aimerais pas finir comme un savon, toujours en diminuant. (C.E.) |

And if you watch A Zed And Two Noughts, you'll understand a little more about the role of the zebra and his associations ! Emma |

I watched ZOO... and indeed, the content of the TLP overlaps the content of a Zed and two naughts... Zookeepers (Van Hoyten is mentioned somewhere) guard caged animals... Animals being freed from their cages, black and white animals seen as prisoners, a zebra behind bars... And a curious fascination with death, the dead body... Funny enough, and completely by chance, I happened to see "Dead Man" by Jim Jarmush again recently. and I was struck by it's similarities with the TLP where horses are concerned. "Dead Man" is clearly inspired by Western movies, is shot in black and white; and there is also an opposition between a white horse and a horserider dressed in white and a black horse and a horserider dressed in black; and one pinto, a black and white horse, that is to be "set free" somewhere along the journey... You also see that Johny depp, who plays William Blake, the "reincarnation" of a visionary poet into a killer, from being a civilised accountant gradually becomes a nor good nor bad mankiller, and gradually frees himself from moral as well as mortal life... _______ Je n'aimerais pas finir comme un savon, toujours en diminuant. Still on the outlook for different meanings of horses, I recently came about an ancient representation of a man's reality, where the horses symbolize his emotions, hence the black and white, for the positive and negative emotions. The full explanation of this symbolism is also seen in the Tarot card "the chariot", where the chariot or coach stands for a man's physical body, the horses for his emotions, the coachman for his intellect and the master for a man's consciousness. For a man to gradually grow or free himself spiritually, not only the four elements must be in excellent condition, but they also have to be connected to one another in the right way. The horses (emotions) are the main forces that drive man, but they need to be solidly attached to the chariot (body) and directed by the coachman (intellect), and the coachman has to understand and follow the orders of the master (consciousness) correctly. In any other way anarchy rules and a man is not master of his own destiny, he turns around in circles, never getting anywhere. This condition, this caroussel, is indeed a harsh prison. Maybe we could see Luper's journey as a quest for spiritual freedom ? _______ Je n'aimerais pas finir comme un savon, toujours en diminuant. (C.E.) |
